GfGD Appoints New Trustees

We are delighted to announce that Dr Natasha Dowey and Dr Sarah Gordon have been appointed to our Board of Trustees, joining Nic Bilham, Flo Bullough, Marie Flemming, and Kirsty Dawkes in overseeing the work of Geology for Global Development (GfGD).

The Board of Trustees share ultimate responsibility for governing GfGD, directing how we are managed and run, to ensure compliance with charity legislation and adherence to best practice.

Both Natasha and Sarah bring a wealth of expertise and skills to GfGD, and we are excited to work with them.

Natasha is a lecturer in Geology at the University of Hull, with specialisms in hazards, volcanoes, and igneous geology. Her research into the uncertainty involved in studying rocks formed in explosive eruptions aims to improve understanding of volcanic hazards.

"I joined GfGD because I believe the most powerful geoscience is that which brings geology and social science into the same conversation; science that thinks about people, and works for the best interests of society. Geology for Global Development are leading the way in advocating for progressive, interdisciplinary geoscience and I am proud to be a part of that." – Natasha Dowey

Prior to this, she spent seven years working in the hydrocarbon industry, with a focus on understanding risk and uncertainty in exploration.

Natasha is passionate about communicating the importance of sustainable geoscience to society; she runs the blog ‘Geoscience for the Future’.

Sarah is a geologist and a co-founder of the risk management society, Satarla.

Sarah Gordon

She has previously worked for Anglo American, which has taken her to live and work around the world, and has a PhD in the chemistry of meteorites from Imperial College, London. Sarah served as a trustee and foreign secretary of the Geological Society of London between 2016 and 2020.

Sarah is particularly passionate about the responsible management of raw materials, and using her geological skills to benefit society.

With the appointment of Sarah and Natasha to the board of trustees, Dr Joel Gill has stepped down as Trustee, but will continue in his role as Executive Director of GfGD, leading the Executive Team to implement and deliver our strategy.
