GfGD launches its new strategy, confirming four interlinked strategic priorities that will shape our activities over the next 10 years.

Our work from 2017 until recently was guided by four strategic objectives summarised by the words 'inspiration, education, action, and leadership'. Here we explore our primary achievements.

To help deliver our new strategy (to be launched later this year), we are looking to grow our team of volunteers. All roles are voluntary. Apply by by 9pm (BST) on 29 August 2022.

We recently responded to a consultation to inform this flagship report of the UN. In our response, we document and describe the landscape of policy-relevant science for achieving sustainable development.

GfGD student ambassadors have compiled a database of taught geoscience higher education courses. This database strengthens geoscience education and supports sustainable development goals in eastern and southern Africa.

Based on results from this project, Brenda Wagaba has suggested a framework for addressing major barriers to water-focused NGOs’ access to geoscience expertise.

Key recommendations from this project include strengthening and supplementing existing geosciences postgraduate training courses on themes aligned with Vision 2030 (such as renewable energy, disaster preparedness and climate change, and water, amongst others), to ensure its needs are met.

In September we celebrated 10 years of activity as an organisation, championing geoscience’s role in delivering a better, more sustainable future for all. We heard the stories of those who’d been involved with GfGD in the past and went on to impressive careers.

GfGD will join the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26, Glasgow). While at the summit, we will be advocating for climate action through a series of Earth science based perspectives and recommendations:

Geology for Global Development (GfGD) has been given provisional admittance to COP26, where representatives will decide if we will be admitted as an Observer Organisation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Following the establishment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, a UN forum meets annually to review progress. This year, GfGD has contributed to a report together with other science and engineering organisations, in which we advocate for governments to endorse the International Geodiversity Day.

A new GCRF-funded project will identify how geoscience education in Kenya can be further developed and paves the way for similar development globally. This work builds on previous work carried out by GfGD Student Ambassadors.

On 20th September 2021, during the UN Global Goals Week, we'll be marking a decade of championing the role of geoscience in delivering a sustainable future.
