GfGD Highlights the Role of Geoscience at 2030 SDG Halfway Point: 2023 SDG Summit & ICSD

This is an important week for sustainable development, marked by two significant events; the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit and the International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD).

The 2023 SDG Summit, taking place on 18-19 September in New York, is a gathering of world leaders aiming to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This summit marks the halfway point towards the 2030 Agenda. In line with this event, Geology for Global Development (GfGD) has released a statement reaffirming our commitment to the SDGs and the critical role of Earth science in achieving these ambitious global goals.

In parallel, the International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) provides a platform for sectors including academia, government, UN agencies, and the private sector to share practical solutions for achieving the SDGs. As part of the ICSD, GfGD will present in a session titled "Building the capacity of research centers to engage at the science-policy interface to address the SDGs". Our talk, "Geology for Global Development: An International Initiative to Strengthen the (Earth) Science-Policy Interface and Help Catalyze SDG Implementation", will provide actionable recommendations underscored by our existing work:

  1. Improve coherence between development, science, and higher education strategies, as demonstrated in our project Strengthening Geoscience Education for Sustainable Development in Kenya.

  2. Increase participation of Earth scientists in national and international policy mechanisms. Our efforts in the 2019 UN Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development showcase this commitment.

  3. Support Earth scientists to actively reflect on, and embed into their work, key aspects of social and political context. Our Higher Education Learning Resources are designed to support this recommendation.

Stay tuned for more updates on our contributions to these events and our ongoing work towards achieving the SDGs. Together, we can help build a sustainable future for all.
